Full Summary of IECMH Training Event

A comprehensive understanding of a child and family’s functioning requires holding multiple perspectives including the child’s development, family relationships, medical factors, exposure to stressors, etc., all within the exploration of contextual forces (socio-cultural, economic, historical, environmental, psychosocial) affecting the child, their family, and the provider. The DC: 0-5 Diagnostic Classification of Mental Health and Developmental Disorders in Infancy and Early Childhood (DC:0—5) (2016) Cultural Formulation for Use with Infants and Toddlers (Cultural Formulation) is a key tool in this examination. It seeks to guide and promote a provider’s capacity for ongoing intentional critical self-reflection and awareness of their own socio-cultural identities and their influences, as well as their values, beliefs and practices. This includes the examination of the historical, political and socio-cultural roots of these values, and of the roles of power and privilege and other systems of oppression in their lives as well as those of the child and family. It is important to highlight that this work cannot be done in isolation, therefore creating diversity-informed reflective spaces are essential to develop and sustain clinical practice grounded in social and racial justice.

This workshop will provide information regarding the DC 0:5 Cultural Formulation and its application to case examples utilizing opportunities for critical self-reflection via journaling, paired and small group discussion, as well as observation of trainers utilizing the Cultural Formulation in live a reflective session. In addition, participants will have opportunities to apply the Cultural Formulation to case examples.
